Atherosclerosis
condition in which arteries have lost their elasticity (hardened) as a result of plaque deposits [toggle]
Atherosclerotic plaque
accumulation of cholesterol and cells that can block the flow of blood through a vessel [toggle]
Bile acid sequestrants (BAS)
a class of hyperlipidemia agents that bind to bile acids in the gastrointestinal tract. In order to produce new bile acid, the liver removes cholesterol from the blood stream, lowering LDL [toggle]
Cholesterol
a lipid used in the production of hormones, bile salts, and cell membranes that contributes to atherosclerotic plaque formation when levels are high [toggle]
Chylomicrons
a very large lipoprotein that contains 90% triglycerides and 5% cholesterol [toggle]
High density lipoprotein (HDL)
the good cholesterol that contains 5% triglyceride, 25% cholesterol, and 50% protein [toggle]
