The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The program provides 2.5 hours (0.25 CEUs) of continuing education credit (program number 204-000-09-405-H01P).
Methods and Format
This is an online activity consisting of audio and slides for three presentations, a post-test, and an activity evaluation tool. Participants must view all presentations, take the activity post-test, and complete the course evaluation to receive continuing education credit. A minimum score of 70% is required on the test for credit to be awarded, and participants may print their official statements of continuing education credit immediately. The estimated time to complete this activity is 2.5 hours. This activity is provided free of charge.
Target Audience
This continuing education activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists in a variety of health care settings and the managed care environment, including large and small hospitals, ambulatory clinics, outpatient pharmacies, health plans, academia, consulting groups, medical groups, and employer/purchasing groups. This activity would be particularly beneficial for those who are interested in cardiology, medication therapy management services, and pharmacy benefits.

Learning Objectives
After participating in this knowledge-based educational activity, participants should be able to
- Describe the etiology of atrial fibrillation (AF) and trends related to its prevalence in the United States.
- Use patient characteristics to predict an individual's risk for developing AF and subsequent risk for stroke.
- Describe how medications are used to address the three primary goals of pharmacotherapy in patients with AF.
- Compare and contrast the efficacy and safety of established and investigational therapies for AF.
- Given a patient case, describe a regimen for AF based on patient-specific factors.
- Identify important pharmacoeconomic considerations in treating AF.
- Describe at least three ways in which managed care pharmacists can streamline care and improve health care outcomes for patients with AF.
