Scott R. Drab, Pharm.D., CDE, BC-ADM, is Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Director of University Diabetes Care Associates. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Duquesne University.

Dr. Drab established one of the first pharmacist-run diabetes care centers located in an independent community pharmacy. As a certified diabetes educator and director of the clinic, he is responsible for care plan development, education, and patient follow up. He has managed the care of hundreds of patients with diabetes over the years, improving health outcomes. In addition to his direct patient care responsibilities, Dr. Drab is responsible for providing drug information to the surrounding medical community and outreach education to the general community. Today the University Diabetes Care Associates serves as a model and prototype for future care centers.

Dr. Drab’s teaching responsibilities at the school of pharmacy involve clinical instruction, as well as classroom teaching. His classes are centered on collaborative and inquiry-based learning while he strives to provide a classroom environment that simulates the practice environment.

Dr. Drab currently serves on several School of Pharmacy and University committees, including the Professional Experience Program Committee, University Senate Community Relations Committee, and the Pitt Pathway Committee. He also serves as faculty advisor and liaison between students and the National Community Pharmacists Association.

Dr. Drab received the Roche Preceptor of the Year Award in 2003 and 2008. He was selected as the 2007 Recipient of the Pennsylvania Society of Health System Pharmacists’ (PSHP) Joe E. Smith Award, which is awarded to a pharmacist member of PSHP who demonstrates excellence in practice and is deserving of recognition for service to his institution, the community, and the profession.

Michelle F. Magee, M.D., a board-certified endocrinologist, is Director of the MedStar Diabetes Institute (MDI) and Associate Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Dr. Magee oversees and coordinates clinical, research, and education programs on diabetes for the MedStar Health system in Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. She co-chairs the system’s Glycemic Control Task Force, a major initiative in MedStar’s eight hospitals, and she is actively involved with the Washington Hospital Center’s (WHC) Diabetes Team. In addition, she helped found the District of Columbia’s Diabetes for Life Learning Center at the Martin Luther King Memorial Library, which was awarded a DC Metropolitan Public Health Association Award in 2007. Dr. Magee received an American Diabetes Association (ADA) National Achievement Award for Outstanding Outreach that same year.

Dr. Magee has participated as an investigator in more than 50 clinical studies. Since 2001, she has served as a co-principal investigator for the NIH-funded Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation Type 2 Diabetes (BARI 2D) Study site at WHC, and she is chair of the BARI 2D Sex Writing Group. She served on the ADA Writing Group on Management of Diabetes and Hyperglycemia in the Hospital, which helped set forward the current standards of care for glycemic control in inpatients, and she is an ADA representative on the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Glycemic Control Resource Room project that provides web-based resources for management of hyperglycemia in the hospital.

Dr. Magee’s research interests include diabetes-related therapeutics and complications, hospital management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, lipids, and minority and gender disparities in diabetes care. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She completed an internal medicine residency, as well as a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism, at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where she remained on the faculty for five years before moving to the MedStar Research Institute and WHC. Dr. Magee is the immediate past president of the DC Metro Area Affiliate of the ADA and is a member of the Endocrine Society.

Jennifer M. TrujilloJennifer M. Trujillo, Pharm.D., BCPS

Jennifer M. Trujillo, Pharm.D., BCPS, recently joined the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Denver in Aurora, Colorado, as an Associate Professor. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson and then completed a pharmacy practice residency at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist.

Before joining the University of Colorado Denver faculty, Dr. Trujillo was a faculty member at the Northeastern University School of Pharmacy in Boston, Massachusetts, and her clinical practice was in adult internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Lahey Clinic Medical Center. She was a member of the interprofessional group that developed and published the non-ICU hyperglycemia management protocols at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While at Northeastern, Dr. Trujillo also devoted much time to teaching, curricular development, and assessment activities, and she served as the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs for two years. She received the School of Pharmacy’s Excellence in Teaching award in 2004, and twice she earned honors at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Innovations in Teaching competition: honorable mention in 2005 and first place in 2008. In 2007, Dr. Trujillo completed the AACP Academic Leadership Fellows Program.

Dr. Trujillo currently practices at The University of Colorado Center for Adult Diabetes Care and Research. The center’s multidisciplinary team provides diabetes management and education to patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Clinical research areas of interest include inpatient and outpatient diabetes management and education. Dr. Trujillo also has a strong interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning, curricular development, and assessment.
